Spotlight Cam Battery not charging with solar panel
solar-panel

I have solar panels connected to my spotlight cameras & I have had to change the battery twice this week already. Initially it was jus one of my spotlight cams bit now both cameras I had to change the battery & the solar panel is on toof top getting at least 12hrs of sun daily. What could be causing the battery drain? This never used to happen

Same issue. Live in Florida. The panel is exposed to sun on most days for 6-8 hrs. My battery is currently dead.

I honestly think its safe to say that the problem is not with the hardware. Frankly, I'd be happy if the rolled back the software/firmware so we couild start charging our units again until the glitch is worked out.

I also have the opposite problem. My ring 2 has no solar charger, but says connected. It’s hardwired, and always recharges back to 100% overnight unless it’s in the 20s or colder overnight. It was in the 40s tonight and didn’t charge at all. It was working great until the solar charger connected field showed up. It’s like it won’t accept the trickle from my doorbell transformer anymore, and thinks it’s on solar. So frustrating!

Not sure if this will work but it's worth a try. Remove the device then reinstall it to the correct setting and see if that sticks

I have the same issue and came here looking for answers. I also performed all of the troubleshooting tips provided in this thread with no success. Would anyone from Ring chime in and provide an update to this issue?

Same here. I installed solar panel for my spotlight cam this weekend. It was 67 degrees and sunny in NY for 2 days this weekend. No charge. Hope to climb ladder with a multimeter this weekend to see if the panel is outputting 5V. +1 for the useless “Solar Panel Status” in the app.

I'm sure you will get a 5-6v reading out of the Solar panel. The issue seems to be with the firmware in the cams that will not "allow" the panels to charge the batteries.

      > @HopeC wrote: > > Panels have all been checked/cleaned (first thing that was done).... cables have all been checked and rechecked (disconnected and reconnected),,, We are in sunny Southwest Florida with no trees near the panels,,, panels on roof of house facing the sky without any shaddow coverage except for the occasional cloud which we haven't gotten much of lately as this is not rainy season (solar panels worked perfectly all through rainy season btw) .... This only started happening after the most recent update to the app... Prior to the update, everything was working great! I wish Ring would just go back to the previous version of the app.... Worked much better. There is no other reason that ALL 4 of my solar panels would just suddenly stop keeping all 4 of my spotlight cam batteries charged... Simultaneously... The issue is definitely the newest app update... Same feelings and situtation here, all four of my Stick Up Cams 2nd gen and Ring Doorbell 2 stopped charging sometime in Oct-Nov.

This is insane. Keep hitting them up at help@ring.comYou'll get a long canned response. Then an email to rate them. Use this chance to let them know how you feel. After all of this time they are finally saying they are looking into it.Here's some helpful tips for Ring.1. Install a 50% charged battery into a Ring Spotlight cam2. Attach a solar panel facing the sun3. Get back to us on how long it took for the battery to get to 100%Right now, with the new firmware, it takes 2 days to go from 99% to 100% if the cam is not triggered at all. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!Agreed!!! They will get back to us quicker if they let us know how long it will take to go from 50% to 10%. My cams took less than a week.

I am having the same problem with my solar panel. I got the solar panel so I wouldn’t have to keep charging batteries & climbing ladders. I have a disability & this is a challenge.

Hi - just chiming in as I just found this thread. Glad it's not me!I have a Video Doorbell, hardwired, and a couple Spotlight Cams, one on a solar panel with two batteries. For quite some everything worked fine and in the solar Spotlight Cam both batteries were always pegged at 100%.In October we had the siding replaced so the cams came down. In early December I reinstalled everything, and also got the new iOS app. Noticed the new features and the solar panel field. Here's what I get now:The Doorbell is NOT on a panel, but its panel status shows "Connected".For the cam that IS on a panel, the panel status shows the "Add a panel..."message, as if it isn't connected. As far as charging, some sunny days both batteries run up to 100%, but other sunny days (like today) one battery runs down. Very flaky!I think the prior poster referencing the app dev process was right on. My hunch is, the new features needed complementary app and firmware updates, and both went out buggy. Unfortunately sounds like Ring didn't fund some ongoing maintenance dollars along with the outsourced development. If that's the case, we may have to wait until they bid out the next full app update, IF they include this in the RFP. It would be nice to get a meaningful update from Ring development.Does anyone know of an open source or 3rd party tool that shows additional metadata, like firmware version or that secret "charging status"?

Iam2928, try charging your battery to 100% then put it on the solar panel. Ring never claimed that the panels will charge a low battery to 100%. They always said it will maintain the battery or at the very least cut down on how often you have to manually charge the battery. Honestly if not too invested with time and energy. I would return your equipment and either look at other brands or wait to repurchase once these issues are solved.

Thanks for pointing this out. This is key. I noticed that one battery would eventually climb from like 10% to 30% during the day. I charged up both batteries and now they are staying in the green. It does appear that Ring has addressed the issue. But what poor communication about the whole thing. I was thinking of converting my legacy home security system over to Ring, but not after this incident. The chance that one errant software update could disable my whole security system is just not worth it.
