Outdoor Camera Battery vs Hard-Wired

Advice Please. We have several (hard-wired) ring cameras. We have a doorbell I think it's hard-wired? We are looking to purchase a new Outdoor ring camera for our place that is out of state for when we aren't there. I don't know much about the battery operated ones.

  1. How long do the batteries last? How many months or is it a year?
  2. I read that they charge based on a solar panel. Are those included?
  3. How close does the solar panel need to be to the camera for charging?
  4. What problems have you had with battery-operated ones?

Thank you community for any help, tips, advice. The purpose of the camera is for security when we are not there but if the battery dies while we aren't there, it defeats the purpose. But it would be much easier for a battery vs an electrician installing.

Hi @Home-Cottage. I would not suggest a battery powered device for this situation, as the expected battery life can vary quite a lot depending on factors like the weather and activity levels. Connecting a Ring Solar Panel can help provide a trickle charge to the battery, keeping it charged longer, but you still run the risk of having the battery die when you are not there. A hardwired option may be a better fit.
