Door/Contact Sensor to Activate Camera

I assumed you could set this up already, but from my reading online (and experience in the app) it doesn’t look like it’s currently possible.

Scenario:

I have a long walk up from my gate to my house, so much so the doorbell camera doesn’t detect motion until the person is past where it is mounted (optimal placement means it isn’t on my actual door). To solve this, I bought the ring door/contact sensors to place on the gate, so when it’s opened it will alert me via chirp from the base station, phone ping, and (what I thought was possible) turn the camera). Before one asks, I’m aware the door sensors still produced by ring aren’t rated for outdoor use (seems the outdoor sensor has been discontinued for some reason). I bought some custom made weather proofing cases for the sensors.

What I want:

I would like the contact sensor to be able to link to a camera, so it will activate when the sensor is tripped. This way you capture all possible footage rather than the last couple seconds.

Possible avenue:

I have the Ring Bridge as I assumed I needed it to “bridge” the door sensor zwave tech to the actual WiFi network. This is what the Bridge does, but only for smart lights? I think it might be reasonable (without knowing how the smart light tech is constructed) to add in the door sensors to link over the bridge.

I also have the base station (obviously) which connects to WiFi as well. The base station sends out a ping to my phone when the door/contact sensor is tripped. Why not make it where that ping also goes to whichever camera I link it to. Basically the same way the cameras are linked to each other. They communicate over WiFi already, and the base station is connected to the Internet as well. This would give way more flexibility to cameras motion sensitivity and range restrictions.

Im aware the alarm system is basically walled off to only work as an alarm system, but I think that is holding the overall system back from its potential. These cameras aren’t recording all the time, which is one of the features I like about them, but sometimes that very fact handicaps their usability.

Hi @user_5ffd33. While the Linked Devices feature allows you to link devices together, you cannot set a Ring doorbell or camera to begin recording after a Ring Contact Sensor is opened. Ring Smart Lighting devices, including the lights and the Ring Bridge, do not use Z-Wave. I have moved your post over to our Feature Request board, which is what we use to gather feedback on the features and products our users would like to see.
