Although being precise isn't as critical as you might be thinking. In that 'ballpark' will be fine. Some people mount the doorbell a little higher for a better view of the vistor's face and to have a further detection range, and some like it a little lower to see if there is a mail package delivery. :)

I just came on here to ask the same question as I'm about to drill the wall for the cable. My door is 2 steps up from ground level so I was planning on mounting it 48" from the ground level rather than from the bottom of the door but like the original question it makes a difference where I drill the hole if it's 48" the bottom or 48" to the top of the unit!

If you are mounting it in a location where there are steps, consider using a Wedge Kit. I hope this helps!
