Ring Alarm Pro with Eero 7
Feature Request: Allow Ring Alarm Pro to Operate Over Ethernet Without Joining the Primary eero Mesh or Broadcasting Wi-Fi
I currently have an eero network consisting of an eero Max 7 as my main gateway, three eero Pro 7 units, and two eero Outdoor 7 units. All of these support Wi-Fi 7.
I also have a Ring Alarm Pro, which has a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router.
The Problem
When I configure the Ring Alarm Pro as part of my existing eero network, it becomes another mesh node broadcasting my primary SSID. This means my devices can potentially connect or roam to the Ring Alarm Pro instead of one of my Wi-Fi 7 eeros, limiting those connections to Wi-Fi 6.
I want to continue using my Ring Alarm Pro for home security without allowing it to function as a Wi-Fi 6 access point on my primary Wi-Fi 7 network.
My Current Workaround — And Why It’s a Problem
For years, I’ve deliberately avoided configuring my Ring Alarm Pro in the eero app.
I set up and use the Ring Alarm Pro for its security functionality, but I never complete the eero Wi-Fi setup portion.
This accomplishes exactly what I want from a Wi-Fi perspective:
● The Ring Alarm Pro does not become another access point on my primary eero mesh.
● It does not broadcast my primary SSID.
● My devices cannot accidentally roam onto the Ring Alarm Pro’s older Wi-Fi 6 hardware.
● My existing Wi-Fi 7 network operates independently.
However, this workaround has a major drawback: My Ring Alarm Pro ends up operating continuously on its cellular backup internet connection instead of using my existing wired home internet connection.
In other words, I’ve effectively had to choose between two undesirable configurations:
1. Configure the Ring Alarm Pro in eero: It can use my normal home internet connection, but it becomes a Wi-Fi 6 access point that my Wi-Fi 7 devices might connect to.
2. Leave the Ring Alarm Pro unconfigured in eero: It stays off my primary Wi-Fi network, which is what I want, but it relies on its cellular backup internet connection continuously.
I’ve been living with the second option for years because maintaining control over my Wi-Fi network is important to me.
But cellular backup should be exactly that — backup, not the permanent primary internet connection for a security system sitting in a home with an existing wired internet connection.
I should be able to connect the Ring Alarm Pro to my existing internet service through Ethernet without being forced to add it as a wireless mesh node.
How I Want Ethernet Connectivity to Work
My Ring Alarm Pro should be able to receive its internet connection through a physical Ethernet cable connected to my existing eero network without being required to join that network as a mesh node.
The desired connection would be:
Internet → eero Max 7 (Main Gateway) → Ethernet / Network Switch → Ring Alarm Pro
I would like two possible operating modes.
Option 1: Wired-Only Ring Alarm Pro (Preferred)
● The Ring Alarm Pro receives internet connectivity through Ethernet from my existing eero network.
● Its built-in eero Wi-Fi radios can be disabled entirely.
● It does not broadcast an SSID or function as a wireless mesh access point.
● It continues to operate normally as a Ring security base station, including its alarm sensors, monitoring, and supported backup functionality.
● Its primary internet connection is wired Ethernet, with cellular connectivity used only when needed for backup.
● It remains manageable through the Ring and eero apps as applicable.
● The main eero network continues operating normally, with all Wi-Fi connections handled by my Wi-Fi 7 eero devices.
This is my preferred solution because I have no need for the Ring Alarm Pro to provide Wi-Fi coverage.
Option 2: Independent Ring Alarm Pro Wi-Fi Network
If disabling Wi-Fi entirely isn’t possible, I would like the Ring Alarm Pro to operate as a completely separate eero Wi-Fi network while receiving internet through Ethernet from my primary eero network.
For example:
● Main eero network SSID: Home-WiFi7
● Ring Alarm Pro network SSID: Ring-Security
● The Ring Alarm Pro receives its WAN/internet connection from a LAN Ethernet port on my main eero network or a downstream Ethernet switch.
● The Ring Alarm Pro maintains its own independent eero network configuration and SSID.
● The two eero networks do not automatically merge, adopt each other’s nodes, or begin broadcasting the same SSID simply because they are connected by Ethernet.
● Devices connected to Home-WiFi7 never automatically roam onto the Ring Alarm Pro.
● Both networks can share the same physical internet connection without being forced into the same wireless mesh.
● Cellular backup activates only when the appropriate primary internet connection is unavailable, rather than being used continuously.
● Ideally, both networks could be managed under the same eero account, although separate accounts would be acceptable if necessary.
I understand that this configuration may involve double NAT. I’m fine with that if necessary, although an officially supported configuration that avoids unnecessary routing complexity would be preferable.
What I’m Specifically Requesting
I want eero to distinguish between Ethernet connectivity for internet access and Ethernet connectivity for joining an existing eero mesh network.
Connecting an eero device to another eero network through Ethernet should not necessarily mean that the downstream device must become a member of the upstream mesh.
There should be an option to designate the Ring Alarm Pro as an independent, Ethernet-connected device that receives internet access from the primary eero network without participating in its Wi-Fi mesh.
I would also like this configuration to be officially supported without triggering unintended cellular backup activation, unnecessary cellular data usage, or other issues caused by connecting two independently managed eero networks.
Most importantly, I want the Ring Alarm Pro to recognize its Ethernet connection as its primary internet source without requiring me to enable its Wi-Fi functionality or integrate it into my existing mesh network.
Why This Matters
I’m not primarily trying to isolate devices for security purposes. My goal is to prevent my Wi-Fi 7 devices from connecting to an older Wi-Fi 6 access point.
I’ve invested in a Wi-Fi 7 eero network, and I want those Wi-Fi 7 access points to handle my wireless connections while retaining the security functionality of my Ring Alarm Pro.
My current workaround proves that I can keep the Ring Alarm Pro from participating in my primary Wi-Fi mesh, but doing so leaves me dependent on cellular backup connectivity.
After years of using this workaround, I would really appreciate an officially supported solution that allows the Ring Alarm Pro to function as a wired security hub without unnecessarily broadcasting Wi-Fi or consuming cellular backup connectivity.
Customers shouldn’t have to choose between using Ring Alarm Pro for home security and maintaining control over the Wi-Fi performance and roaming behavior of their newer eero networks.
