Wired Doorbell Pro Install and Transformer Problems
I’ve had the ‘video doorbell pro’ in use for about 7 years (using ring chimes) with few problems. Last year the button cracked but it still worked okay. Fast forward to July 17th. Out of the blue the mechanical doorbell chime (that I don’t use) went ‘dong’, started buzzing and smelled like burning wires. I took the cover off and saw that the ‘front’ wire had become loose somehow. I turned off the power and figured it must be the transformer. Luckily (I thought), the week before I had purchased the ‘wired doorbell pro’ on ‘prime day’ and it was being delivered in a couple days. I’d just get a new transformer and wait. Fast forward to today. I have now gone through 4 transformers (24v-40va, 24v-40va, 16vac-30va, 16vac-30va). I’ve tried bypassing the chime box, using the power pack with the chime box, and no matter what I still cannot get the wired doorbell pro working. My last attempt was installing a new chime box (just in case) with a new transformer and the result was the same dong, buzzing and hot burning wire smell that started it all. I’ve tested everything with a multimeter and have continuity but nothing is working as it should. I just need to know why, after 7 years everything is failing. Is the camera bad, the power pack, what is it??? Please help.

The most recent setup is the Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (Video Doorbell Pro 2) using the included Pro Power Kit V3 - Doorbell Chime is the ‘Defiant (Home Depot brand) Smart Compatible Wired Contractor Kit’ (item #1011955562 model #18000298) that included a 16VAC-30VA Transformer with the chime box. I setup everything per Ring instructions.

@user_9d8258 Thank you for sharing. I don't see that specific model on the chime kit compatibility list for the Wired Doorbell Pro. It may be better to have our support team take a closer look here to see what is causing problems with the installation. You can contact our support team by sending a message @Ring on Facebook, X, or Instagram. Feel free to include the link to this Community thread in your message, that way they can see everything you've shared already.

Hi @user_9d8258. What is the make and model of the chime kit you have? Not every chime kit is compatible with the Wired Doorbell Pro. The transformer should also be 16-24 VAC, 10-40VA max, 50/60Hz. The Pro Power Kit must also be installed on the chime kit.
