Trying to understand how motion detection really works so I can record ALL motion around car in front of house
battery-video-doorbell

Background: I had my car wheels stolen just in front of our house one night a few weeks ago.

Goal 1: prevent reoccurrence of theft, or at least get a recording of thieves in the act. Constraint: car is parked aligned with camera within, but very close to, the 30 ft mark.

Goal 2 (unrelated to goal 1): detect all people walking on walkway which goes roughly from one end of car to house. Constraint: car, door and camera are all aligned.

Problem: recording of people around car or on walkway happens only very sporadically. I initially purchased the cheapest Ring Video Doorbell, and as it did not work well, I gave the Battery Doorbell Pro a try, but it does not help.

Note: in parallel, I purchased a couple of Blink Outdoor 4 at a fraction of the price of the Rings and they do work. So, I think my goal is reasonable.

I also purchased a Stick Up Cam Battery for troubleshooting purpose. They have a small blue LED that turns on when they wake up, I assume based on infrared sensor input. I can see that them waking up does not necessarily mean that a recording will be made. I therefore assume that they do a bit of image analysis once they wake up and go back to sleep if the image analysis does not see anything of interest. By extension I assume that, for the Battery Doorbell Pro, the radar input is also taken into account.

If those assumptions are correct, the problem is that I am not sure what to do to skip the (faulty) image analysis so that recordings are made whenever the infrared sensors detect movement. Also, the radar does not work well when I walk around my car, and I do not know what to expect when the radar cannot confirm that detected movement is within the specified zone.

What should I do? Thanks!

E.g. should I disable Bird's Eye Zone? Will I still be able to record the 3D paths if I do so?

What does "motion sensitivity" refer to exactly? Image analysis? If so, is there a way to completely skip image analysis?

Hi @user_b8f980. Are you also using Smart Alerts? If you are, try disabling it to see if it detects motion like you want it to. With Smart Alerts off, it will record and notify for pretty much every movement.

If you disable Birds Eye Zone, your Camera will no longer use 3D motion detection, and it will only go off of your Motion Zones.

Motion Sensitivity decreases or increases motion alerts. I recommend increasing it if your Camera is not picking up all motion events or if you want it too.

To conclude, it will take trial and error with fine-tuning your Motion Settings to get it to work exactly how you want it.

      Hello @Justin_Ring

I am confused about what Smart Alerts does. The Android app suggests its sole purpose is to tag a subset of the motions as person or package. Does it also filter motions in the first place?

      Thanks

@user_b8f980. We have more information regarding Smart Alerts here. This feature allows you to select the notification and recording options you want for Person and Other Motions. Compatible devices also have a Package option under Smart Alerts.

Certain factors, such as weather or lighting, can impact the camera's ability to determine if a motion contains a person or not. In those situations, the motion will be flagged as Other Motion rather than Person. As with all motion settings, I recommend giving Smart Alerts a try to see if you like it how it performs in your setup.
