Interconnected Smoke Alarms
troubleshooting

I installed two First Alert smoke/CO units recently and then when applying for an electrical permit I learned I have to upgrade my smoke alarms to be interconnected, IE when one goes off the other goes off as well.  I was surprised that the Ring/First Alert units are not interconnected and contacting ring was no help as the agent didn't know if you could have the Ring system set off the other smoke alarm siren but I assume the answer is no.

I could try and convince the inspector that the ring siren going off (I assume it does but have not tested it, not sure how I do that...) is sufficient to meet the intent of the regulation but I suspect that won't work.  I'll probably have to buy two new non-Ring compatible smoke alarms and just place them next to the existing ones.  I guess I could also buy the new ones, throw the Ring ones out and buy a couple of the "listener" devices but that seem kinda hokey.

Wondering if anybody else has gone through this.  Ring really needs to work with First Alert or some other company to design a interconnected z-wave smoke/CO unit.  More and more, this is a requirement that will make its way into all jurisdictions.

Hi @user_90c0e2. I'd recommend finding interconnected smoke & CO alarms that meet the requirements for the permit, then installing Ring Alarm Smoke & CO Listeners next to these alarms. This should prevent you from running into any problems with the requirements or the inspector, and you'll still be notified of any smoke or CO alarms via the Ring app from the Listeners. We have more information on the Smoke & CO Listeners here. I hope this helps!
