Replacement Claim Denied After Stolen Ring Camera Was Recovered Damaged

On July 4, my home was nearly destroyed by fire. In the aftermath, the property was left badly damaged and largely uninhabitable. At that point, my Ring doorbells were essentially the only surveillance I had protecting what remained of the property.

On July 26, I filed a police report after a trespassing/theft incident at the property. Among the items stolen was one of those Ring cameras.

On September 23, nearly two months later, the camera was discovered in the woods behind the property. I attempted to revive it, but it had clearly been exposed to the elements. The protective cover over the lens/camera area is missing, and while the camera will still produce an image, the picture quality is now poor at best.

Since that theft, I have actually continued investing in the Ring ecosystem. I already had three Ring devices, and I subsequently purchased three additional devices to install around the detached garage so I could continue monitoring the property while my family decides whether to rebuild or sell.

I submitted a replacement claim to Ring and followed the steps for theft/vandalism. The claim was denied outright, with what appeared to be a form response, no meaningful explanation for the decision, and no apparent avenue or opportunity to appeal or request further review.

That is the part I find most disappointing. This was not ordinary wear, accidental damage, or a request to replace an aging device. The camera was stolen during an incident documented with law enforcement, remained outdoors for approximately two months, and was recovered physically damaged and no longer functioning at its previous quality.

Given that I now have six Ring devices, five tied to protecting this property, I would have expected at minimum a clear explanation of why the claim was denied and some avenue for reconsideration, rather than a blanket denial with no explanation or appeal process.

I understand that replacement programs have terms and limitations, and I am not suggesting that every claim should automatically be approved. I am simply asking for transparency and a reasonable opportunity to understand or challenge the decision.

Has anyone else dealt with a Ring replacement claim involving a stolen device that was later recovered damaged? If so, were you able to have the decision escalated or reviewed beyond the initial claims process?

I would also appreciate hearing from a Ring Community moderator about whether there is an escalation or appeal process available for circumstances like this.

One thing I should add: I’m genuinely impressed that the camera still powers on and produces an image at all after being stolen and spending nearly two months outdoors. The issue is that the lens-area cover is missing and the image quality is now poor. So while I’m frustrated with the claims process, I’ll absolutely give Ring credit for the hardware surviving that kind of exposure.  The one I had on my front door actually started to warp with the heat of the fire at the top, but it still produces a clear picture.  Overall I am satisfied with the products themselves, and the environments they can handle.  Of three devices I only lost the one that was directly in the fire.

Hi @Neutral_Sam. I'm very sorry to hear about the fire at your home, and the subsequent trespassing and theft incident. I hope you and your family are okay. Regarding the stolen Ring camera, there are some requirements that must be met for the theft protection policy to apply. This article covers what is and is not covered in our theft protection policy, and this page has some additional important notes concerning the policy.

Given the extenuating circumstances, we'd like to look into this further to see if there are any options available.
